Haemodialysis unit

The haemodialysis unit (Hemobesa S.L.) is a service that teats both IMQ patients and patients from Osakidetza in concert with the CAV Department of Health since 1995. It was opened in 2013 and is located on the 1st floor of Clinica IMQ Virgen Blanca.

We have a modern haemodialysis centre with the latest Braun Dialog-Plus monitors with the possibility of online haemodiafiltration, bicarbonate powder, a centralized acid system, synthetic medium-high permeability polysulfone dialyzers, a modern water purification system with two-step osmosis and an automated heat disinfection system (Herco HP 1250 DPH) installed in 2013 that provides us with water for dialysis with the most demanding parameters for "ultrapure" water.

The service quality is certified by AENOR with ISO: 9001since 2004, the latest renewal in 2016.

Haemodialysis treatment is performed both in standard mode and online haemodiafiltration mode.

It consists of the following layout:

  • A haemodialysis room measuring approx. 160 m and 20 possible places, an entrance hall, adapted bathroom for patients and medical dispatch occupying a wing of this floor (200 m in total).
  • Monitor maintenance room/warehouse, Nursing Office, staff bathroom and a cleaning room in another enclosed area on this 1st floor.
  • Patient waiting room in the hall of the 1st floor.
  • A 30-metre water treatment room located on the second floor where all of the new pretreatment/reverse osmosis/centralized acid tanks are.
  • The kidneys have different functions:

    • They eliminate excess water together with toxins generated by our body.
    • They generate erythropoietin (which is the hormone that is responsible for generation of red blood cells)
    • They control calcium, phosphorus and vitamin D metabolism.

In chronic renal failure these functions cannot be performed, so toxic substances like urea accumulate, water, salt, potassium, and phosphorus are retained... and anaemia appears. When kidney failure is severe symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, anaemia, fatigue, headache, swelling in the legs, asphyxia, bad breath, etc can appear. Usually the nephrologist will order dialysis to be started before that happens, when your kidney function is approaching 10%.

Haemodialysis is a technique that replaces the main functions of the kidney, passing the blood through a filter (operating as an artificial kidney) where it is purified, returning to the patient free of impurities.

Technology

  • The equipment that this dialysis room has is the following:

    • 28 Braun Dialog-Plus dialysis monitors (6 on reserve), two of them exclusively for HCV+ patients and five of them with the option for online haemodiafiltration. Routine bi-annual technical maintenance program and technical maintenance staff to resolve issues, provided by the company IZASA S.A.
    • Sodium bicarbonate dialysis solutions (cartridge): DIALCART 760 from NEFRO-ION SL. High bio-compatibility dialyzers from Medical Asahi (100% synthetic polysulfone): 90% LEOCEED-H series, high permeability (Kuf = 75 - 90 ml/Hr/mmHg) and 10% LEOCEED-N series, with low permeability (Kuf = 14 - 17 ml/Hr/mmHg) Set of Dialog Plus A-V lines, bio-compatible and sterilized with gamma rays, specific to the monitor. 20 dialysis chairs: 14 Lumex - 566 G brand and 6 Promotal brand electric chairs.Manual and semiautomatic Cardiolife TEC - 7621K defibrillator by Nihon Codeen. Their condition is checked monthly. Automatic external defibrillator (DEA Powerheart G5 by Cardiac Science).
